When one thinks of poverty, usually Africa or starving children come to mind. According to the U.S. Census, 43 million Americans live in poverty – and each year since 2001 those numbers have grown. Poverty can be found in our own communities due to job loss, home forclosures, or unexpected illness.This has resulted in more
families depending on food banks, welfare or in some cases, homelessness. We want to put a face to this issue and find out what are realistic solutions to curing poverty in America, and then the world. So many times, you pass a panhandler on the street, refusing to make eye contact or verbally acknowledge the individual. If you were to look closely, you would notice another human being, struggling to address overwhelming problems. We want to put a name and a voice to that face. To change your reaction and move you to changing the circumstances which continue the cycle of poverty.
During our freshman year at Chapman University in Orange, California, we decided we wanted to do something epic before we graduated. We thought our age and circumstances limited our options. We thought wrong.
“We Are The Ones” Project was conceived. “We” is not classified as two college men, but youth and society as a whole. We are the ones who want to end poverty and we are the ones who are going to do it.
